Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) recently announced the launch of a new Refugee Vocational Training Program (RVTP).
The new RVTP is an initiative aimed at empowering new arrivals to the United States who have resided in the country for five years or less.
Learning Essential Skills
Eligible individuals include Refugees, Asylees, Cuban/Haitian entrants, Afghan/Ukrainian Humanitarian Parolees, Special Immigrant Visa holders, or victims of human trafficking.
RVTP is designed to equip participants with the essential skills needed for entry-level positions in high-demand industries.
“The RVTP initiative gives our students the global education access they deserve to open doors to the workforce,” said Dr. Greg Feeney, BCTC President/CEO. “Our business/industry partners are requesting more qualified, diverse candidates for high-demand jobs. This enables better communication with clients and workers in the industry. The technical and soft skills that we provide will equip students to be successful and will prepare them for a better life.”
Tailored workforce certificate programs cover a range of fields, including welding helper, electrical helper, A+ Computer Certification, Nurse Aide Certification, and Apparel Production.
Spanning three consecutive semesters, the program encompasses specialized training in English proficiency, vocational readiness, and professional skill development.
Upon completion, participants will receive personalized guidance from an employment specialist to facilitate a successful transition into the workforce and to ensure a minimum salary of $15 per hour, fostering economic stability and growth within our community.
Who To Contact
Funding for the program comes from the Kentucky Office of Refugees (KOR), which received a grant of nearly $400,000.
“This program allows an opportunity for newcomers to Lexington to take advantage of the amazing resources that BCTC can offer in an equitable way,” said Karissa Porter, Refugee Career Pathways Director. “The Multicultural and Global Learning Center is incredibly honored to host this program and see how participants are able to make strides in their career journey.”
