REVIEW: Pig Beach BBQ is a Must Visit Restaurant on Louisville’s Waterfront

If you live in or are visiting Louisville, Pig Beach BBQ is a new restaurant you’re going to want to check out.

The restaurant, which opened in August 2023, was founded in 2015 by restaurateur Rob Shawger and fellow award-winning pitmasters Matt Abdoo and Shane McBride. The Louisville establishment is the third location to open, other spots include Queens, New York and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Let’s start with the food.

Pig Beach BBQ is known for, you guessed it, its smoked meats. However, restaurant-goers have much more to pick from. The menu includes pulled pork, brisket, ribs, burgers, wings and even a specialty hot dog.

Recently, I stopped in for dinner and ordered pulled pork with two sides of pickles and mac and cheese. The meal was delicious!

If you enjoy a cocktail, I highly recommend their take on the “I’ll Have Another” bourbon-based cocktail. Very tasty!

Now, the space. I love the setup of this restaurant!

The building is an impressive 14,000 square feet and two levels, each with its own experience.

The first floor offers a cafeteria-style ‘to-go’ section for those out and about at the park, while the second floor offers a more traditional sit down experience.

Pig Beach BBQ is the first tenant to occupy the building in seven years. For those who live in Louisville and are familiar with the space, it was formerly home to Tumbleweed TexMex Grill.

To me, the best thing about Pig Beach BBQ is the location. The back patio offers beautiful views of the Big Four Bridge and the Ohio River! This spot could easily become a warm weather destination for Louisville.

Pig Beach BBQ is located at 1201 River Rd, Louisville, KY 40206.
